International Cuisine: Try a Country's Food on their National Holiday
2:18 PM | Matt Peloquin |
|
I've found myself recently trying to find ways to incorporate more international flavors into my dining routine. And that's when I thought of trying to mix some good food with a little cultural learning. So it seemed so simple: put together a list of countries from around the world and include a national holiday they celebrate. I'd then try to sample some cuisine from some of these countries by keeping together a list by date. At that point, it seemed to make even more sense to just build out an entire calender on Google to share.
So here it is...
Here's a way to schedule some international food experiences. On a given countries national holiday, use it as an excuse to try a native recipe or head out to a restaurant featuring food from that nation. Below you will find a calender of different nations and their holidays.
To add this calender to your own calender, just follow the instructions from the Google icon at the bottom right corner of the calendar.
If anyone notices any holiday mistakes, please comment here.

Montevideo, Uruguay in Food Photos
11:57 AM | Matt Peloquin |
|
Took a two night weekend trip to Montevideo to grab a few things I've long craved, with seafood at the top of the list. Despite it's location near the Atlantic, Buenos Aires is as far from a "seafood city" as you can get. Yet not far away in Montevideo, Uruguay, you'll find that beef and parrilla are still king, but also lots of great seafood options. But even when in a city with better seafood, you can't fully bypass trying the excellent parrilla options...and of course a chivito of two. Not to be forgotten...we also included a trip to one of my favorite German restaurants.
Grilled meats from Estancia del Puerto, Montevideo |
Parrilla Mariscos Mixto: shrimp, pulpo, calamari, corvina, salmon, zucchini, potato, squash, red and yellow bell peppers from Rara Avis, Montevideo |
Pez de espada con papas natual from El Peregrino, Montevideo |
Apple pancake with rum flambe with vanilla ice cream from El Peregrino, Montevideo |
Grilled swordfish with boiled potatoes and sauteed onions and peppers from El Peregrino, Montevideo |
Costilla ahumada con papas Suiza y pure de manzanas from one of my favorite German restaurants, Dackel, Montevideo |
And another shot: Costilla ahumada con papas Suiza y pure de manzanas from one of my favorite German restaurants, Dackel, Montevideo |
Always good to get a quality dark dunkel beer... |
Salchicha y medio-medi |
Caprese salad from Dackel, Montevideo |
Tasty pan seared fish in a curry and safron sauce with mussels from El Fogon in Montevideo |

Oktoberfest Food
10:03 AM | Matt Peloquin |
|
Come the end of September and beginning of October each year, I always use it as an excuse to experience good German food and beer in honor or Oktoberfest.
This year was no different. But I took it a step further by traveling to Villa General Belgrano in Argentina for their annual Oktoberfest, one of the best in the world. In fact, it is technically the 3rd largest in the world.
Before heading to the festival, I started it off with some home cookin':
Once in Villa General Belgrano, a town with an alpine feel to it, the food was a big step up. Here are a few samples from the restaurants we visited.
As for the Oktoberfest festival in Villa General Belgrano, here's a taste of what the atmosphere was in the town and the festival:
